FREE-BOOK scammer
Today, as I was scrolling through Facebook, I came across a page called Book Xcess. They were offering a free book to the first 500 people who asked for a PM as part of their 14th-anniversary celebration. When I looked at the comments, I saw that many people had left a PM and some of my friends had also commented.
However, I became suspicious and decided to investigate. I discovered that the genuine page is called BookXcess, without a space in between.
It was clear to me that this was a scam. I quickly warned my friends not to fall for it. I later learned that some people had downloaded an app after receiving a PM from the scammer. Once downloaded, the app would hack their bank account details and transfer their money away.
If you encounter a similar incident, please report it immediately to the police and call the National Scam Response Centre’s (NSRC) hotline at 997.
