As a Licensed Financial Planner in Malaysia, I frequently guide clients through the complexities of social security protection. SOCSO (PERKESO) is not just a mandatory deduction, it is a foundational, government-backed disability and life insurance policy that provides crucial financial protection for you and your loved ones.
When planning your finances, one of the most common questions is: How long can I or my dependents receive SOCSO payouts? The answer depends entirely on the type of benefit scheme and your specific circumstances.
The duration and eligibility for receiving SOCSO benefits depend on whether the claim falls under the Employment Injury Scheme or the Invalidity Scheme.
This scheme covers workplace accidents, occupational diseases, and commuting accidents.
Duration: If a workplace or commuting accident results in a permanent disability assessed at more than 20%, the contributor receives a monthly pension for their entire life (lifetime) .
Age Limit: There is no age limit for receiving this lifetime payout once approved. Even if the accident happens at age 62 under the Second Category contribution for workers over 60, you are eligible for lifetime monthly payments if the disability is permanent . The Employment Injury Scheme continues to protect workers as long as they are employed, regardless of age .
This scheme covers chronic illnesses, 24-hour disabilities that are not work-related, and provides protection against long-term incapacity.
Duration: The Invalidity Pension is paid monthly for as long as the employee suffers from the invalidity, or until death. Upon death, it converts to a Survivors’ Pension for eligible dependents .
Age Limit to Apply: The contributor must submit the Notice of Invalidity before reaching the age of 60 . The age limit for coverage under the Invalidity Scheme was raised from 55 to 60 years in 2013, aligning with Malaysia’s minimum retirement age . If the chronic illness or 24-hour disability occurs after age 60, they no longer qualify for the Invalidity Scheme .
As of June 1, 2026, PERKESO officially launched the Skim Kemalangan Bukan Bencana Kerja (SKBBK), commonly known as the Lindung 24 Jam Scheme. This is a significant expansion of social protection, as it covers non-work-related personal accidents 24/7.
Key Feature: There is no age limit for this scheme—employees aged 60 and above are fully covered as long as they remain employed .
This is a massive update for financial planning, ensuring comprehensive protection for all workers, regardless of age or employment status.
If a contributor dies due to a work-related incident (Dependents’ Benefit) or dies of natural causes while qualifying under the invalidity scheme (Survivors’ Pension), the money is distributed to dependents according to these timelines :
Duration: For life.
Note: They will continue to receive this lifetime pension even if they remarry (applicable for remarriages on or after May 1, 2005) .
Standard Duration: Until they reach 21 years of age or get married, whichever occurs earlier .
Higher Education Exception: If the child is pursuing their first degree at an institution of higher learning, the payout is extended until they complete that first degree or marry, whichever comes first .
Incapacitated Children: If a child is mentally or physically disabled and unable to support themselves, they will receive the benefit for life, as long as they remain unable to sustain their livelihood .
Duration: For life .
Duration: Until they reach 21 years of age or get married, whichever occurs earlier .
For a financial planner, understanding these SOCSO provisions is crucial. Here are my key takeaways:
Lifetime Security: SOCSO provides lifetime pensions for permanent disabilities, widows/widowers, parents, and incapacitated children. This creates a safety net that traditional private insurance policies may not fully replicate.
Age-Proof Coverage: While the Invalidity Scheme requires claims before age 60, the Employment Injury Scheme and the new LINDUNG 24 Jam Scheme offer unlimited age coverage for active workers.
Education Support: The extension of child benefits until completion of a first degree is a powerful tool for securing your children’s future, even in your absence.
Remarriage Reminder: The removal of the remarriage penalty for widows/widowers (post-2005) ensures continued protection, reflecting modern family dynamics.
As a financial planner, I always advise clients to view SOCSO as the foundation of their protection plan, to be complemented with private insurance or investments for more comprehensive coverage. The recent expansion with LINDUNG 24 Jam makes SOCSO an even more vital component of a sound financial plan.
